FAQ
- 1 - GENERAL
- 1.1 What is an automatic storage/filing system ?
All non-static storage/filing systems with built-in motors, electronics and SW that allow the handling and storage of materials are automatic storage/filing systems.
- 1.2 Why opt for an automatic system ?
Automatic systems, depending on the technical options, offer different levels of performance and therefore advantages that are more or less appreciable in each case. Some systems work on the storage method (e.g. in height, such as in vertical systems), others focus on the exploitation of space (e.g. saving on aisles between shelves, as is the case for mobiles), and others on the level of service (e.g. total automation with the total handling of materials stored).
- 1.3 What are the advantages of mobile systemsWhy opt for an automatic system ?
The maximum exploitation of space thanks to the elimination of aisles, and the possibility of the reuse of shelving and modularity/future expandability of the storage system.
- 1.4 What are the advantages of vertical systems ?
The intensive vertical storage of small to medium sized materials with appreciable savings on floor space, complete computerised control of the storage system, and total closure of the storage facility from dust and unauthorised entry, and access via bays at different heights.
- 1.5 Are automatic systems expensive ?
Automatic systems are undoubtedly more expensive than simple shelving, but the economic quantification of the main advantages (space saving, reduction in manpower, total storage system data information, handling times etc) usually renders this a reasonable investment, and in some cases technically indispensable.
- 1.6 What is an LU ?
This is an acronym of ‘Loading Unit’, in other words the basic element in the storage and handling of materials used as a unit of reference. It can be the actual container for the materials (e.g. plastic crates or large metal stillages) or the collection element (e.g. pallet).
- 2 - STORAGE SYSTEMS
- 2.1 What would be the best automatic storage system for a cold room ?
The mobile system, because of the maximum exploitation of space generated. The economic savings are significant thanks to the drastic reduction in the size of the cold room, not to mention the energy savings resulting from the compaction of materials.
- 2.2 How many versions of mobile storage systems are there ?
Because of the many different requirements, mobile systems are produced according to need, with cantilever shelving (for bars, bar bundles etc), with pallet racks, shelf shelving, garment hanging shelves, all meeting the requirements of ambient temperature premises and those of cold rooms, environments with fire hazards (flameproof systems) for each type of load bearing capacity, manually operated or automatically managed by PC and operating SW.
- 2.3 When is the purchase of a vertical storage system the right choice ?
- 2.4 What happens when an automatic system stops working ?
A competent technical assistance section will solve the problem in a matter of hours. Advanced diagnostic systems such as H24 from ICAM prevent problems from occurring or if one should arise to solve it quickly and even remotely.
- 2.5 Are automatic storage systems always safe ?
The appropriate design and production of automatic storage systems, in line with accident prevention legislation (Presidential Decree 547 dated 27/10/55 and Legislative Decree 626 dated 19/9/94), European Community Directives (EEC Dirs 98/37/EC, 89/336, 73/23) and other construction standards, guarantees the safety of automatic storages system in all work situations.
- 2.6 What other guarantees does ICAM offer on its products ?
In addition to complying with all legal requirements, ICAM products are covered by a minimum warranty period of 12 months and the H24 self-diagnostics system and remote control. What is more ICAM has covered every sales liability risk by taking out Product Risk and Civil Liability insurance policies as a further guarantee for its clients.
- 3. FILING SYSTEMS
- 3.1 For what materials are automatic filing systems normally used ?
All types of paper documentation (books, registers, folders, cards) and non-paper (CDs, DVDs, magnetic cassettes, tapes).
- 3.2 Which are the automatic filing systems ?
They are the mobiles, vertical rotating and shifting, miniload and all the non-static filing systems, which thanks to motors, electronics and SW allow the handling and storage of materials.
-
3.3 Under what circumstances are automatic filing systems preferable to static ones ?
In all situations where it is necessary to exploit space, reductions in personnel and the computerised management of the materials to the utmost.
- 3.4 Why are mobiles so widely used for filing ?
Because they achieve a truly efficient use of space for a relatively moderate cost, as is the case with the hand wheel versions.
- 3.5 Where do rotating filing systems work best ?
Where a filing system is required near to the place of work, exploiting the height available.
- 3.6 What are the fire load problems with automatic filing systems ?
The major intensification in the use of space leads to an increase in fire loading that calls for an appropriate technical assessment.
- 3.7 What are the problems in automatic filing systems with weights being concentrated on the floor ?
The concentrating of filed materials on smaller areas of floor space requires floors to have greater load bearing capacities. This will need to be checked, particularly in offices not located on the ground floor.
- 3.8 Can vertical filing systems also serve premises on different floors ?
An interesting alternative is that of installing vertical filing systems (shifting or rotating) that intersect several floors of one single office building with bays for accessing the filing system on every floor. By so doing it is possible to obtain a single, large filing system with direct access from every floor/office and the possibility of selecting the access of each user with respect to all the material filed.
