In an institutional archive, the value of a document extends far beyond the information it contains.
The Bank of Italy manages a documentary heritage of significant institutional value, requiring secure storage, controlled access and long-term preservation. Archive space must be used efficiently while ensuring that documents remain protected and accessible only to authorised personnel.
To meet these requirements, ICAM installed COMPATTA Light at the Bank’s headquarters in Rome. The Mobile Racking System maximises storage capacity within the available footprint, organises documents in a structured manner and protects the archive from unauthorised access.

The logistical challenges
A drive to improve internal efficiency and reduce operational costs led to a thorough review of document management processes. The assessment revealed a significant imbalance between available floor space and the volume of records requiring archiving.
In an institution like Banca d’Italia, where confidentiality obligations, strict access controls, and the sensitivity of archived material are non-negotiable, archiving inefficiencies carry consequences beyond disorganization. They affect security and operational continuity.
The main challenges were:
Suboptimal use of available space, including areas affected by structural pillars.
Difficulty maintaining consistent archive order.
Insufficient access control over document retrieval.
Need for active protection against unauthorized access and environmental damage.

To address these requirements, Banca d’Italia installed 237 COMPATTA Light electric mobile shelving units at its Rome headquarters.
The system uses a single-aisle mechanism: shelving units slide along rails and open one aisle at a time, concentrating the archive into the smallest possible footprint without sacrificing accessibility.

Document protection is built into the system’s architecture. When closed, the shelving units form a continuous barrier that shields records from theft, dust, humidity, and fire.
Electric operation reduces physical effort and improves picking speed for archive staff. With a total archiving capacity of 22,300 linear meters, COMPATTA Light delivers high-density document filing without compromising security or order.
