MAXI STC - Stacker Crane for Long Materials

Over 400 load units. Materials up to 7 metres long.

MAXISTC is ICAM’s AS/RS for automated storage of long materials such as profiles, bars, tubes and extrusions, managed in a fully automated cycle.

ICAM’s stacker crane AS/RS for intensive long material handling.

As production volumes grow, manual handling of long materials becomes the bottleneck.

Metal profiles, steel bars, tubes, beams and industrial extrusions. Above 400 load units, manual handling and traditional cantilever racking stop scaling. Cycle times grow. Errors multiply. Operators are exposed to risk. MAXISTC is ICAM’s automated stacker crane for long materials, the ideal solution when volumes exceed 400 load units.

Why MAXI STC is the right choice for intensive long goods management

MAXISTC is engineered for high-volume industrial environments where speed, precision and operational continuity in the handling of long and heavy materials are non-negotiable.

  • INTENSIVE

Designed to manage 400+ load units within a single AS/RS system. 500 load units on traditional cantilever racking require 3,200–4,300 sq ft of floor space; MAXISTC handles the same volume by leveraging the vertical and longitudinal development of the building in a fraction of that footprint.

  • SIMULTANEOUS

Unlike conventional stacker cranes that handle one load unit per cycle, MAXISTC moves two LUs simultaneously via two independent handling chains. Return of processed material and delivery of material to be machined happen in a single movement, no empty runs, no waiting.

  • ACCURATE

Steel load units with shaped ends allow smooth and precise insertion into the storage cells, maximum stability during handling and full surface protection, essential for aluminium profiles and delicate materials.

  • SAFE

The stacker crane handling area is a protected and controlled zone. Perimeter guards, controlled access points and emergency stop devices eliminate operator exposure to the handling of long, heavy materials, the main risk factor in traditional storage systems.

  • CONNECTED

ICON, the ICAM warehouse management software, governs every operation in real time: full traceability by code, batch and order on every load unit, automated missions, user management with differentiated authorisations. Native integration with ERP, WMS and factory systems with no custom development required.

  • SCALABLE

The structure is designed to grow with volumes: additional aisles, additional levels, additional operating bays. MAXISTC is an evolutionary AS/RS platform for operations managing long materials under high-variability demand conditions.

How it works

MAXISTC is an AS/RS system based on a stacker crane operating inside a storage aisle between metal racking organised in slots. The stacker crane moves simultaneously along the horizontal axis (X) for travel along the system and the vertical axis (Z) for positioning across storage levels.

Every storage and retrieval cycle is fully automated, with zero manual intervention in the movement area.

The stacker crane handles two load units (LU) simultaneously via two independent handling chains. When serving the operating bay, the system executes a swap in a single cycle: it retrieves the LU containing processed material and immediately deposits the LU containing material to be machined.

The entire sequence is governed by ICON, which calculates the optimal mission order and tracks every operation in real time.

  1. 01

Step 1: Storage or retrieval request

The operator sends the mission via ICON, integrated with the ERP/WMS system. The stacker crane receives the cell coordinates and moves automatically, with no manual intervention required.
  2. 02

Step 2: Automatic travel along X and Z

The stacker crane moves simultaneously along the horizontal axis (X) and vertical axis (Z) toward the target storage slot. Integrated handling minimises cycle times.
  3. 03

Step 3: Load unit retrieval or storage

The system retrieves or stores the LU in the slot with millimetre precision. The shaped ends of the LUs ensure smooth insertion and surface protection of stored materials.
  4. 04

Step 4: Simultaneous LU exchange at station

When the stacker crane reaches the workstation, it executes the swap in a single cycle: deposits the LU with processed material and retrieves the one with material to be machined. Zero empty runs.
  5. 05

    Step 5: Full traceability

Every operation logged in ICON: item code, batch, quantity, operator. Inventory updated in real time, available for reporting and integration with business systems.
  6. 06

Step 6: Return and mission optimisation

The stacker crane returns to optimal position. ICON calculates the next mission sequence, minimising travel distances and maximising system throughput.

Technical Data

System and structure

MAXISTC is an AS/RS stacker crane system for the automated storage of long goods. The structure consists of metal racking organised in slots, with a central handling aisle. Designed for high-volume industrial installations, with capacity from 400 load units and above.

Stacker crane

The stacker crane operates simultaneously on both movement axes and handles two load units (LU) in parallel via two independent handling chains. The simultaneous swap logic eliminates empty runs and optimises system throughput.

When to choose it

MAXISTC is the right choice when

MAXISTC is the AS/RS for long materials, ideal when at least one of these scenarios applies:

• you manage over 400 load units of long materials, such as profiles, bars, tubes, beams or extrusions
• manual picking and refilling cycle times have become a bottleneck for production lines
• operators work close to long, heavy loads, creating ergonomic and safety risks
• you need full traceability by item code, batch and order for every load unit
• floor space is limited and traditional cantilever racking is no longer enough
• you want to integrate storage with ERP, WMS and factory systems without custom development

For volumes below 400 load units, MAXIᴸ is the vertical storage solution dedicated to long materials, with a motorized shuttle and flexible indoor or outdoor configuration.
