SILO² VLM for maintenance spare parts management — Delizia S.p.A., Noci (BA)

Delizia S.p.A.: Apulian excellence in mozzarella and burrata

Founded in 1992 by Giovanni D’Ambruoso in Noci, near Bari, Delizia S.p.A. is one of Apulia’s leading producers in the dairy industry. With revenue of 79 million euros, around 300 employees and a fleet of over 40 company-owned vehicles, Delizia distributes extensively across Italy and in more than 26 countries throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
The Noci production plant covers 12,000 m² and produces mozzarella, burrata, caciocavallo and fresh dairy products using milk collected every morning from local farmers.
In a production process where every hour counts and the raw material cannot wait, plant continuity is a non-negotiable operational requirement. And plant continuity depends on spare parts.

The logistical challenges

All spare parts were stored on traditional racking spread across different areas of the plant, with no dedicated storage area.

With this setup, MRO management had become an operational and financial cost that grew together with the business.

The critical issues were clear and costly:

  • Visual search across the racking, with maintenance technicians forced to move around the plant and rely on memory.
  • Ambiguity between identical spare parts stored in different locations, with a risk of picking the wrong item.
  • No up-to-date inventory: overstocking useds as a safeguard against not having the right part available in the event of a breakdown, with hundreds of thousands of euros tied up in inventory.
  • Unauthorized withdrawals with no traceability.
  • Maintenance delays with potential impact on production continuity.

SILO²: 3,700 spare parts in 19 m², access restricted to authorized maintenance technicians

The SILO² multi-column Vertical Lift Module installed in the MRO area is 6 meters high and provides 34 m³ of storage capacity in just 19 m², with 3 storage columns and 1 picking and refilling station at ergonomic height.
The 109 trays store around 3,700 spare parts and kits, organized by product family and supplier to optimize handling times. Every day, 60 to 80 picking operations are performed, with average picking lists of 5 to 6 items.
Only 2 of the plant’s 6 mechanics are authorized to access the storage system. The fully enclosed structure protects spare parts from dust, humidity and unauthorized withdrawals.

ICON–ERP integration and remote access: the warehouse remains operational even off site

Thanks to ICON–ERP integration, the 2 authorized maintenance technicians can operate the automated storage system remotely. By connecting from off site, they can view stock levels, manage SILO² VLM and deliver the exact component needed for the maintenance job in progress to colleagues at the plant.
Integration with the company ERP ensures full traceability for every operation and real-time inventory

Thanks to SILO² Vertical Lift Module, all spare parts are now stored in one place, safely and in an organized way, instead of being scattered across different racking areas throughout the plant.
This system has allowed us to eliminate over 90% of the racking, recovering a significant amount of floor space.
Real-time monitoring of available stock protects us from potential stockouts or excess inventory, bringing numerous operational and economic benefits.
