Duvel Moortgat: continuous production at a global scale
Duvel Moortgat is a historic Belgian brewery with an international presence and production running across highly automated lines. Managing multiple formats, frequent line changeovers and seasonal demand peaks requires an internal logistics operation that can respond without delay.
In this context, the immediate availability of spare parts, tools and support materials is an operational requirement, not a nice-to-have. A delay in locating a component during a changeover translates directly into lost production time.

The logistical challenges
Before automation, material management relied on conventional shelving, with approximately 5,000–6,000 spare parts and changeover tooling distributed in an unstructured manner.
The main challenges were:
• Long picking and refilling times: over 10 minutes for a short list of items
• Difficulty locating components quickly during machine changeovers
• Excessive floor space usage, poorly organised
• Limited inventory traceability
In a continuous production environment, even a few minutes of waiting creates efficiency losses. Spare parts logistics had become a bottleneck for the lines.
SILO²: fast, traceable picking for spare parts and tools, guided by IRIDE
To optimise production logistics, Duvel Moortgat installed a multi-column VLM, SILO² . Configured with 3 storage columns and 144 trays, the system concentrates spare parts and tool inventory into just 21 m² by making full use of vertical space.
The picking and refilling stations are equipped with IRIDE, the ICAM’s smart picking device, which guides the operator to the exact position and quantity to retrieve, reducing both errors and picking time. Integration with ICAM’s ICON software and the company’s management system enables digital pick-list management and real-time stock traceability.
The result is a smoother flow: materials reach the operator exactly when needed, eliminating waiting time and unnecessary movement along the production lines.
