Erbil Children’s Hospital: advanced pediatric care in Iraqi Kurdistan

Erbil Children’s Hospital is a healthcare facility in the Iraqi Kurdistan region, built to provide support and care for the large number of mothers and children who could not access adequate medical treatment or surgery within the country. It is a project born from a concrete responsibility: bringing advanced standards of care to a context where access to healthcare is not guaranteed.
In a facility of this kind, every operational choice has a direct impact on quality of care. Medication availability, integrity and traceability are critical variables: this is why, from the hospital design phase, the management chose to automate medication management. The logistical challenges

In a pediatric hospital in a complex region such as Iraqi Kurdistan, the requirements for medication management were clear and non-negotiable from the start.

  • protection of medications from external agents: dust, high temperatures and temperature fluctuations can compromise medication efficacy, an unacceptable condition in a pediatric care environment
  • controlled access: medications must be accessible only to authorized staff, with every picking fully traceable
  • strategic positioning: the hospital is organized into multiple wards, so the medication management system had to be positioned to serve all of them efficiently, reducing time and walking distances
  • space optimization: in a hospital facility, every square meter is valuable and dedicated to care, so the medication storage system had to occupy the smallest footprint

SILO² at the center of the hospital: medications protected and accessible to every ward

The SILO² multi-column Vertical Lift Module is installed at the center of the hospital facility to serve all surrounding wards while minimizing staff travel distances. Its fully enclosed structure protects medications from dust, high temperatures and external agents that could compromise their efficacy. Access is controlled and every operation is traceable: every picking is authorized, and every movement is recorded.
Within a footprint of 21.19 m², the automated storage system provides 19.52 m³ of capacity across 3 storage columns, with trays in different usable heights to accommodate medications of varying types and sizes.
