RB Impianti: made-to-order precision machining

Based in Affi, near Verona, RB Impianti carries out precision mechanical construction and machining of custom-designed parts, spare parts for machinery, hydro-mechanical component assembly, and CNC turning and milling operations. All production is made to order: once each batch of iron components is completed, it is palletized and must be stored while awaiting delivery to the end customer.
In a production environment where space is scarce, every square meter taken away from manufacturing has a direct cost.

The logistical challenges

Pallets containing finished iron components ready for delivery were stored on a mezzanine that the company wanted to eliminate.

The main critical issues were:

  • Non-stackable materials of different types and sizes, taking up excessive floor space
  • Each movement required a side-loading forklift to take pallets to the mezzanine and a manual pallet truck for delivery: double handling, double the time
  • The mezzanine reduced usable floor space and made the production area harder to work in
  • Goods waiting for delivery remained inside the facility without adequate protection

SILO² installed outdoors with custom trays for palletized loads

SILO² is installed outside the facility with 4 storage columns, 86 trays and a capacity of 54.18 m³ in 22.39 m² of footprint.
The automated storage system has a maximum load capacity of 120,000 kg. The trays were designed and manufactured with custom side panels to contain and stabilize the pallet during every internal handling cycle: a dedicated configuration for loads of this type and size.

Telescopic station facing indoors

The telescopic picking and refilling station faces inside the facility: the forklift unloads the pallet directly into SILO² without leaving the building, eliminating the transfer from ground floor to mezzanine. The same forklift, from the same access opening, loads the pallet when it is ready for customer delivery.
Load and unload take place in a single cycle, with one vehicle and no intermediate transfers.
