Royal Fish: frozen seafood wholesale distribution from the Venetian lagoon to global markets

Founded in Marghera, near Venice, Royal Fish is a leading company in the wholesale distribution of frozen seafood products, working with partners around the world. Its new facility in Campagna Lupia, (VE), was built with storage capacity of over 2,000 metric tons and designed around logistics efficiency, optimized cold room space and reduced energy costs.
In frozen seafood distribution, logistics is not only an operational matter: it is a regulatory requirement. Industry standards require strict cold chain maintenance at every stage, from receiving to shipping. Every storage choice has a direct impact on product quality, compliance and cold room operating costs.

The logistical challenges

As the number of SKUs continued to grow, Royal Fish’s cold rooms could no longer keep up with storage demand.

The main critical issues were:

• insufficient cold room capacity compared with catalog growth: the traditional racking system occupied most of the space with permanent fixed aisles, taking usable volume away from storage

• high energy costs: the empty spaces between static racks caused cold air losses, increasing energy consumption per stored pallet

• costly alternative: building a new cold room would have required significant construction investment and long-term operating costs

• traceability and access: static racking slowed down pallet identification, location and retrieval, while cold chain continuity had to be maintained at every step

COMPATTA: +80% in cold storage at –25°, one aisle open at a time

ICAM installed 9 double faced COMPATTA mobile bases with electromechanical movement, each 2.5 m wide and 18 m long. Each base supports pallet racking with 5 spans and 4 loading levels up to 7.3 m high, with a load bearing capacity of 158,400 kg per base. The system is certified for operation at negative temperatures down to -25°C and manages pallets of seafood products measuring 800 × 1,200 mm and 1,000 × 1,200 mm, with maximum weights of 1,100 and 1,200 kg.
A single working aisle opens only where needed, eliminating the fixed access aisles that can take up to half of the available space in traditional racking systems. Compared with the previous configuration, storage capacity in the same cold room increased by over 80%.

RELAX system: better cold air distribution, lower energy cost per pallet

The RELAX system is the distinctive feature of this installation: when not in use, the mobile bases automatically and evenly space themselves apart, promoting air circulation inside the cold room. The generated cold air is distributed evenly across all stored pallets, reducing energy consumption per pallet stored.
Less empty space, better cold air distribution and lower energy cost, all within the same existing cold room.

Key results

More capacity, less energy, no new cold room. The same footprint, working much harder.

  • +80% cold room storage capacity

Same floor space, far greater usable volume: permanent fixed aisles eliminated and converted into storage capacity

  • Reduced energy cost per pallet

The RELAX system distributes cold air evenly across all pallets and maintains a certified cold chain at -25°C

  • No new cold room required

The investment in COMPATTA avoided the construction and operating costs of a new refrigerated facility

  • Cold chain guaranteed

Certified for operation at -25°C: every operation takes place under conditions that comply with industry regulations.

  • Selective and safe aisle access

One aisle open at a time: photoelectric barriers, emergency stop buttons and a control panel outside the cold room ensure operator safety at every access

  • Barcode traceability and RF management

Warehouse management software with barcode handling and RF terminals for precise product identification and controlled stock access
