ICAM COMPATTA mobile racks in a low-temperature cold room for storing frozen products — Geldi 2000, Modugno (BA)

Geldi 2000: integrated cold-chain logistics for the foodservice sector

Founded in 1993 in Modugno, near Bari, Geldi 2000 is a leading company in integrated cold-chain logistics and the distribution of frozen food products for the foodservice industry. The company operates over 12,000 m³ of refrigerated storage space, with the capacity to manage goods from –25°C to +4°C.

In this industry, cold room management is not just an operational issue: it is a direct financial variable. Every empty cubic meter is refrigerated at a cost, and every additional pallet stored inside the cold room means energy that is not wasted on unused volume.

The logistical challenges

As handling volumes increased, the existing cold room could no longer provide the storage capacity required.

In a negative-temperature environment, optimizing storage density directly reduces energy consumption: less cold air to maintain, less energy consumed.

The main critical issues were:

  • Insufficient storage capacity for growing volumes, with no possibility of expanding the refrigerated area.
  • Traditional racking that did not fully exploit the cold room’s available height of 9.7 m.
  • Unused refrigerated volume increasing cooling energy costs.
  • Need to guarantee access to every aisle without disrupting operations.

COMPATTA in a cold room: maximum storage density, full accessibility, reduced energy consumption

Geldi 2000’s COMPATTA mobile racking system consists of 9 electromechanically driven mobile bases engineered to operate in a negative-temperature environment.
The bases, 2.5 m wide and 24.5 m long, run on floor-integrated rails and support 9.7 m high pallet racking. The automated storage system opens the access aisle only where required, keeping all other aisles compacted. This reduces unused refrigerated volume inside the cold room, with a direct impact on energy consumption.
Access to goods is guaranteed from any aisle, at any time.

Key results

More capacity, lower energy costs, same refrigerated area

  • +80% storage capacity

Compared with the previous traditional racking system, within the same refrigerated area

  • Energy costs reduced

The higher storage density minimizes unused space inside the cold room and the related cooling energy consumption

  • Guaranteed access to every aisle

No compromise on operations: goods remain accessible at all times

  • No structural expansion

Capacity maximized without expanding or building a new refrigerated area

In cold chain logistics, cold room efficiency is also energy efficiency.

With COMPATTA, Geldi 2000 transformed the same refrigerated area into a space that stores 80% more goods, reducing unused volume, energy costs and the need to invest in additional cold storage space.
