Moretto Brakes Components chose ICAM’s SILO² VLM for die storage at its Casarano facility, with an integrated jib crane for operator-height retrieval.

Based in Casarano, near Lecce, Moretto Brakes Components specializes in the production of Anti Noise Shims for brake pads used by all major automotive manufacturers, serving both OEM and aftermarket markets.
With 12 employees, revenue of 3 million euros and a production capacity of 20 million parts per year with a 0.01% error rate, the company is considered a strategic partner by leading brake system manufacturers worldwide.
Dies are at the heart of the production process: they shape the Anti Noise Shims, and every press requires the correct die to be available in order to operate. Storing them properly, finding them quickly and handling them safely is an operational requirement, not an option.

The logistical challenges

As the business grew and the product range expanded, the number of dies to be managed increased significantly.

The previous solution (closed metal cabinets with Plexiglas doors) occupied around 300 m² of floor space and presented clear critical issues. A solution was needed to protect the dies, drastically reduce the occupied floor space and make operations faster, safer and fully traceable.

The main difficulties were:

 

  • Manual die search, resulting in lost time and risk of error
  • Saturated floor space, with cabinets no longer able to accommodate all dies
  • Non-ergonomic picking and refilling operations for dies weighing up to 100 kg
  • No traceability of picking and refilling operations
  • Slowdowns in press setup times, with a direct impact on productivity

 

SILO² for heavy dies: trays with high specific load capacity

The SILO² Vertical Lift Module is 5.6 meters high and provides 33.84 m³ of capacity in just 20.75 m², with 6 storage columns. The trays selected for this project measure 853 × 802 mm, with a specific load capacity of 556 kg/m² and a maximum load of 400 kg: a combination that sets SILO² apart from traditional vertical lift modules, where large, low-specific-capacity trays are not suitable for heavy, concentrated loads.
Thanks to the possibility of configuring SILO² with compact trays and high specific load bearing capacity, up to 1,001 kg/m², heavy dies and industrial tooling can be stored safely, eliminating the risk of tray deformation and maximizing the number of items stored per square meter. Each tray accommodates 4 or 6 dies weighing 100 kg each.

Operator-height picking with jib crane: ergonomics and traceability on every cycle

The operator enters the die code on the control console PC and receives it directly at the picking and refilling station at operator height, with no manual search. The jib crane with electric chain hoist integrated at the station makes every picking and refilling operation ergonomic and safe, eliminating manual lifting of heavy loads.
The computerized management system ensures full traceability of all inbound and outbound operations: every die is always located, every movement recorded.
